THE PROGESTOGEN-ONLY PILL: ARE CONSIDERING USING IT

Where do you get the minipill?

You have to go to a local doctor, or see a doctor at a Family Planning Centre to have the minipill prescribed for you. The doctor will take your medical history and give you a check up which will include taking your weight and blood pressure, checking your breasts for lumps and possibly taking a Pap test if this is due.

What does the minipill cost?

Prices vary but a packet of minipills that lasts for one month costs about $5 on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). It costs even less if you have a Pharmaceutical Concession Card.

Things to think about if you are considering using the minipill

• If you decide to use the minipill it is very important that you remember to take it every day and at the same time every day. If you are not going to be at home when you usually take your pill, you will need to remember to take it with you.

• It is very important that you go to a doctor to get your own prescription for the minipill. It can be dangerous to take a pill that has been prescribed for someone else. Everyone should be checked first and then given the type of pill that will suit them best

• If you use the minipill for contraception you may want to use condoms as well because they help to protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
